What is Whop and how does it work?

Whop is a marketplace and storefront for selling digital access: paid Discord and Telegram communities, memberships, courses, and software. Founded in 2021, it handles checkout, payments, and automatic access control, and does around $4 billion in annual commerce across 183,000+ sellers. Creators pay no monthly fee, just 3% plus payment processing per sale.

What Whop Is, in One Paragraph

Whop is a marketplace and storefront builder for selling digital access: paid Discord and Telegram communities, memberships, online courses, software, and tools. A creator builds a hub (a "whop"), lists what they sell, and Whop handles checkout, payments, and access control automatically. Founded in March 2021 by Steven Schwartz, Cameron Zoub and Jack Sharkey, it grew from a way to sell Discord access into a platform doing roughly $4 billion in annual commerce across 183,000+ sellers and 145 countries.

The short version: if you sell access to a community, a signal group, a course, or a piece of software, Whop is the storefront and the payment layer, plus a marketplace where buyers can discover you.

How Whop Works: Storefront Plus Marketplace

Whop does two jobs at once, and understanding the split is the key to the platform:

1. It is your storefront and checkout. You create a whop, add products (a Discord invite, a course, a software license, a monthly membership), set prices, and Whop generates a hosted checkout. When someone pays, Whop automatically grants access: it adds them to the Discord, unlocks the course, or issues the license. When they cancel or their subscription lapses, access is revoked automatically. That automation is the core of what you are paying for.

2. It is a marketplace. Beyond your own link, whops are listed in Whop's marketplace where buyers browse and discover products. This is the discovery engine, the thing a plain checkout tool like a payment link does not give you. In May 2025 Whop removed its old 30% marketplace commission, so marketplace-sourced sales now pay the same low fee as sales from your own traffic.

What People Actually Sell on Whop

Whop found its first traction with creators selling paid Discord and Telegram access, and that DNA still shapes the catalog. The main categories:

  • Community access: paid Discord servers and Telegram channels (trading, sports betting, sneaker and reselling communities, niche hobby groups).
  • Memberships and subscriptions: recurring access to content, coaching, or a private group.
  • Courses and digital products: video courses, ebooks, templates, downloads.
  • Software and tools: apps, bots, license-key products, and developer tools built on Whop's app ecosystem.

The platform is deliberately broad, which is also why buyers should look closely: alongside legitimate skills communities, Whop hosts high-hype categories like crypto and betting signals. That does not make the platform illegitimate, but it does mean the quality of any individual whop varies. More on that in is Whop legit.

How Creators Get Paid (and the Fees)

Whop charges no monthly plan. You pay a fee only when you sell:

ComponentFee
Platform fee3%
Payment processing2.9% + 30¢
Total on a $100 sale$6.20

That is roughly $6.20 kept by the platform and processor on a $100 sale, versus $13.20 on Gumroad. Payouts are fast, and there is no fixed monthly cost, which makes Whop cheap to start on: you pay nothing until money comes in. For recurring communities at scale, a flat-plan platform like Skool can work out cheaper per dollar, which is the core Skool cost tradeoff. Whop's advantage is zero fixed cost plus a marketplace.

Who Whop Is Built For

Strong fit: creators selling access to a Discord or Telegram community, subscription memberships, or software, especially those who have no audience yet and want the marketplace to help with discovery. The instant access-control automation is genuinely useful if you would otherwise be adding and removing members by hand.

Weaker fit: if you sell simple one-off digital downloads to your own email list, a lower-fee download platform may serve you better. And if you run a large, established paid community with steady recurring revenue, compare Whop's per-sale fee against Skool's flat plan before committing. The right pick depends on whether you value zero fixed cost and discovery (Whop) or the lowest fee at scale (Skool).

How to Start Selling on Whop

Going live takes well under an hour:

  1. Create your whop. Sign up and set up your hub with a name and description.
  2. Add a product. Connect a Discord server, upload a course, or list a membership, and set the price and billing (one-time or recurring).
  3. Connect payouts. Link your bank so Whop can pay you out.
  4. Share your link and list on the marketplace. Drive your own traffic and let marketplace discovery add to it.

There is no upfront cost, so you can test an offer before investing. If you are specifically building a recurring community, the mechanics are worth doing deliberately: see how to build a subscription business on Whop.

See What Sells Before You Build

The hardest part of selling on Whop is not the setup, it is knowing what to sell and at what price. InsightRaider tracks pricing and revenue signals across 500,000+ products and communities, including Whop, so you can see what comparable products charge and earn before you launch.

How we analyzed this

  • Sample size: 146,271 public Gumroad products tracked across 18 categories, covering $206M in estimated lifetime revenue.
  • Revenue estimation: sales count Γ— listed price. Validated against 30+ creators who shared actual numbers (Β±15–20% margin of error).
  • Data window: 2024-01 to . Refreshed monthly.
  • Exclusions:inactive products (no sales in 90 days), spam/test products (< 1 review or price = $0).

Limitations

  • Revenue figures are estimates, not reported sales. Creators may use unlisted links or off-platform fulfillment that don’t appear in public data.
  • Our dataset covers activeproducts only. Creators who quietly stopped selling don’t skew medians upward here, so real-world failure rates may be higher than reported.
  • Category medians can vary Β±15% depending on sampling period and seasonality. Always treat single data points as directional, not absolute.
